OPAR – USER'S GUIDE
Browse the archive
Browsing is a good way to access documents if you do not have a specific idea of what you are looking for. There are four ways to browse the archive: by year, by author, by subject or by type. Select 'Browse the archive' on the navigation bar on the left of the screen. You will be presented with a list of possible values. Select one of these. You will be given a list of references to documents in the archive (if any which match this value).
To access a paper simply click on its reference in the display.
The archive offers two levels of searching, simple and advanced. They are similar, but the advanced form lets you search the archive using a more complex range of fields. You can save your search using the link 'Save search'. You can select a name for your search, planning the email alerts you'll receive and your search accessibility in the archive.
Access the simple search using the 'Search' button or the 'Advanced search' link on the left of the screen. To perform an advanced search, use the advanced search link.
Type your search terms into the boxes. You can use logical operators (AND/OR) to improve your search. The question mark on the right side of each field offers more information about the field. You can order results by: year, author's name and title.
Certain services require you to register with the system, such as the document depositing service. You can 'Create an account' using the link on the left of the screen. You can register a username, email address and password that must be confirmed. The system will email you a confirmation URL to visit to enable the password. Once you are in your user area, you will be presented with the following options: 'Deposits', 'Profile', 'Saved searches' and 'Logout'.
Once you have selected 'Manage Deposits', you can create a 'New item' or 'Import Item' (you can only import items with records – Doi, Pubmed or XML formats – or items existing in the web).
The page will display items you are working on or you have submitted but are not yet approved by an editor. Select the items you want to view and check off one or more of these options: 'User Workarea', 'Under review', 'Live Archive', 'Retired'.
ou will be presented with a list of items, select one of these clicking on its reference in the display.
You will be presented with a page in which you will find five options:
There are three options in your profile page. You can 'Modify your profile' editing your account information, and check your 'Saved Searches' and 'User History' with the information about creation and modifications of your items.
This page will display your saved searches and three options for each: 'Search Again', will launch the same search again; 'Settings' allows you to select a 'Search Name', a periodic 'Email alert' if anything in the search changes, and whether you want your search to be available or not, with 'Search Availability'; 'Remove' will delete the selected search from the list of your saved ones.
Depositing Process - Self-archiving
The depositing process offers two options: 'New Item' or 'Import Item'. You can only import items uploaded from an existing web file or from external sources such as Pubmed or by using the DOI (Digital Object Identifier).
The depositing process is divided into a number of stages that you can move between using the 'Back' and 'Next' buttons at the bottom of each screen.
Do not worry about losing information you have entered when you go back on a form: the system will store everything you have entered when you press it. However, you should not use your Internet Browser's 'back' button when you are depositing items, since information you have entered will be lost.
Each stage of the process is described in the following sections.
In this page you will be presented with a list of document types, select which type you are going to deposit. The options you choose here will affect what bibliographic information about your deposit the system will collect in later stages. Once you have selected, 'Save' and click on the 'Next' button.
In this page you can select and upload the item you are going to deposit. You can check publisher's copyright & archiving policies, clicking on the SherpaRomeo link. Select 'Browse' and use the 'Upload' button in order to send a copy of your item to the live archive. At the bottom of the page, you will be presented with a list of fields. Fill in the fields with item's information.
The question mark on the right side of each field gives you more information about the field. You can upload additional files (as images in HTML formats) clicking on the link at the bottom of the screen. Select 'Save' and click on the 'Next' button.
In this page you can enter item's information. A red star points out the required fields. Entering more information will improve item's accessibility and circulation. Fill in the fields, select 'Save' and click on the 'Next' page.
In this page you should select the subject or subjects from the list that best represent the content of your paper. Please, try to be as accurate as possible and don't just select lots of categories if you're unsure, just pick the categories you are sure of. Once you have selected subject/s, select 'Save' and click on the 'Next' page.
In this page you can go through the depositing process. By agreeing, the depositor grants a non exclusive, royalty-free license to OPAR, L'Orientale Open Archive, on behalf of the open archive OPAR, that warrant: the depositor is the owner of the copyright in the whole Work (including content & layout) or is duly authorized by the owner(s) or other holder of these rights, and is capable of granting under this agreement a license to hold and disseminate copies of the material; the Work is not and shall be in no way a violation or infringement of any copyright, trademark, patent, or other rights whatsoever of any person; if the Work has been sponsored or supported by any organization, the depositor represents that s/he has fulfilled any obligations required by such contract or agreement.
